    Aluminum Trailer Durability

    Folks,

I am looking at buying one of the following to tow behind a 5,000 lb suv that has a rated 7,700 lb tow capacity for trailers with brakes on a 12% grade. I will be towing a 2500 lbs car and 400 lbs of race wheels and tires.

Trailex open aluminum trailer 900 lbs

    Trailex enclosed aluminum trailer 2000lbs

    ATC open trailer 1300 lbs

Featherlight open aluminum trailer 1400 lbs

Does any one have any experience with any of the above products, their dealer support on the West Coast. Trailex seems the lightest and has the best features, but is it stupid light, also a bit concerned about it being bolt together vs. welded...resonance waves can shake bolts loose.

    Thanks for any tips.

    VM

    Re: Aluminum Trailer Durability

I've got a Trailex 18 foot open trailer.  It weighs about 900 lbs.  I pull it with a 2001 Tundra Ext.Cab 4x4 V8.  I've towed cars that weighed 2200-3200 lbs. plus gear.  The previous owner hauled Corvettes.  I bought the trailer 4 years ago and it was about 20 years old then.  The only thing I've done to it is replace the brakes.  Being bolted together just means everything is adjustable.  I can reposition the tire stops, tie-downs, etc., depending on what I'm hauling.  Nothing has ever come loose.  It's an old trailer but has held up great.

    Re: Aluminum Trailer Durability

We bought a brand new Trailex about 3 years ago.  It's been great (expensive but great).  Haven't had any problems with it.  We store it outside exposed to the elements and you can't even tell.  It still looks brand new.  We're very happy with it as the other option was to buy a big huge diesel truck to our old standard steel trailer (2500 lbs).  It's made a big difference towing.   I also like the great design of the trailer (how you tie the car down for example is very slick) and how adjustable everything is.

Good luck finding a used one on the West Coast.  I looked for over a year and never had any luck.  We ended up having one shipped to us for BIG $$$.  But with the gas prices being what they are now, I think we made the right decision.

Guys thanks for the feedback, I am going to Fontana tommorow to see the Trailex exhibit, they are expensive, but in the long run it sounds like you save alot of money and headaches.

Check Ebay and Craigslist for used and compare those to new prices.  Aluminum trailers do cost more but they also hold their value better.

    Re: Aluminum Trailer Durability

Montrose Trailers in Montrose, MI has good pricing on aluminum trailers.  The only issue is shipping to the west coast.  You can save by waiting for several west coast orders to come in and then group shipping them out and splitting up the cost accordingly.  Paid $7500 for my 1500 lb enclosed aluminum trailer and another $1200 for shipping early 2007.  Nothing else could really compare for the weight vs cost.
