tire wear (longevity) between A6 and 710 and Z214?

I'm very likely going to be moving to SP next season (from ST) and am looking at the above tires- I think all three are pretty competitive (c70 compound in the z214)- looking for the one that is going to live the longest :)

    thanks

we have over 90 runs on our A6's and a good amount of tread left. not sure how sticky they are anymore, but still good for local events (when marcus dosn't show up with his ESP Mustang)

The tires are 315/30R18 Hoosier A6's

Front to rear the tires wear pretty identical (if i didn't mark them I wouldn't know which had been on the front or rear)

Car weighs about 3000 lbs with fairly even weight distribution and plenty of camber.

Re: tire wear (longevity) between A6 and 710 and Z214?

I bet you could search and find lots of answers to this......

my $0.02:  pavement conditions, weight, pressure, wheel widths, car differences (alignment, etc), driving style, temperature differences, storage conditions.... tons more stuff  all make it hard to compare different people's experiences.

i had multiple sets of each on a spyder.  I got about 90 runs out of A6's and about 180 out of the V710's (the one time I didn't upgrade before they were junk).  at 90 runs the A6's had been flipped once, and were both cycled out, and starting to cord at the inner and outer tread junction grooves.  At 180 runs the V710's had 1.5/32nds tread left all across the tread, and suddenly had dramatically less grip, no flipping.

A6's have a little time on course over the v710's during the early runs (or a lot more, if they come in the right size and v710's don't).  A6's punish mistakes more harshly, and reward 99% of the limit driving.  In my car, A6's had more frequent problems with ice mode, and to me, felt vague at the limit.  The v710's give me great feedback, and let me fix small errors fairly seamlessly.

the majority of what I've come up w/ searching deals w/ grip/feel two obvious important factors in choosing a tire, not much on wear however

it appears from your experience that the 710's outlast the A6's by a fair amount

Re: tire wear (longevity) between A6 and 710 and Z214?

yes, in my experience on a car that is friendly to tires, the v710's last much longer.  It might not be so dramatic if you have a car that always cords tires before they cycle out, or it might be worse.  I have no idea.  i'm surprised more people haven't posted by now....

my feeling is that v710's drop off only a little at first, but then fall off a cliff (for me it was around 180 runs, and I've had pax ftd at over 120 runs on v710's).  the a6's start a little stickier but then drop off a little more steadily.

is there a size advantage to one of the three for your car?  What is the car?

car is a 04 WRX wagon, if I can swing it fitment wise I'm going to try and fit 275/40/17's- all three are offered in that size.  if I wimp out then probably 245/40, only the A6 and 214 are offered in that size- none of them offered in a 255/40/17 which would be a nice "compromise" between the two sizes

I was going to caution you about going by the size printed on the sidewall (ignore that and go by the measured dimensions), but they seem (coincidently) to be about the same size.  the kumho is a hair smaller diameter, but nothing dramatic like the difference between the 13" kumho's and the 13" hoosiers....

Big Sky, this season is my first on R-Comps.  I'm loving them.  I'll never go back to street tires.

As far as tire wear, I will second what has been previously posted.  V710's wear better than A6's.  I asked many of my local drivers about wear issues prior to purchasing the Kuhmos.  All of them said that Hoosiers have measurably better grip, especially when new.  But the Kuhmos wear much longer.

    I went with the V710.

What kind of car, what level of competitiveness are you looking for, and how well setup is the rest of the car? My DSP R burns through a pair of fronts in 25-30 runs. I'm limited to A6's though, as nobody else makes a 275/35/15. It's fairly well setup, it's just a heavy'ish fwd car with a decent amount of power. The rear tires have ~130 runs on them.

Re: tire wear (longevity) between A6 and 710 and Z214?

If you can get enough camber and don't go "Dukes of Hazard" around every big sweeper....then the hoosiers should last you and be "grippy" for 100+ runs and they LIKE HEAT.

For example...this weeekend I had the joy of attending the CCR-SCCA 24 hour autox...it was a short ~27 second course but great for a test and tune type event which is how I treated it. 3 sweepers (2 increasing and 1 decreasing) 1 180 and 2 4 pin slaloms. I went with the tires I had left from Toledo and they still have stick!!! With this weekend the tires have 120+ runs ( 4 big events, a few locals, and 2 test and tunes)

I still have a set of v710s kicking around that I plan to use for a track day but they are heat cycled out while still showing plenty of tread. My hoosiers stick till cording...with maybe a .75 s drop off over new on a 55 second course.

     Just my opinion...

For reference, I drive an ESP camaro and I cord rears before the fronts.

Re: tire wear (longevity) between A6 and 710 and Z214?

Hankook C70: I ran 275/17's last yr, after approx. 70 runs, they lost their grip, but there was still lots of tread left...I drive these to/from practices now, and I still have lots of rubber left.  (I rarely co-drove, so these saw a lot of events / heat cycles)

Hoosier A6: Front 295/18, Rear 315/18.  I just completed my 77th run on them this yr and they still feel grippy.  I had swapped to new Hoosier for the Packwood NT, and I couldn't tell much of a difference going between the old and new A6's.  There's still a good amount of tread left on the hoosiers (around 30%) (I've co-driven on these a lot more...so lots of run, but not as many heat cycles)

*my driving has improved a lot over the past 2 years (this is my 2nd yr)...so driving style and car set-up has changed - all of which may influence tire longevity.

If you're taking the wrx to ESP I highly recommend trying to go with the 275/30/15 :)  Your brakes are easier to find 15" wheels that will clear than the '06/07 4 pots...and 15s are cheaper all around.  The advantage there is that your gearing will be hella short and will accelerate like a bat out of hell.
