    Need some advice

I have been a drag racer for years and felt it was time to try something else.  I have been racing my Evo in the SM class this year and having a lot of fun and top points for this season.  I tried my first hill climb last weekend and it made me realize that I need a dedicated car for my new found love of corners.  So I was going to buy a formula vee and the guy backed out on me.  From that I decided to build my own.  I am a bodyman by trade and have all the equipment to build something like this.  Plus I feel it would be more rewarding to build what I race.  So what I am saying is that I am completely new to all of this and any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

What I want to build is a formula style car similar to the formula vee.  I have a friend that races a Amod and I feel that it is to small for me.  I want a longer wheelbase.  I would like to run a Subaru motor due to having an extra one sitting around.   But from the rules I understood a VW motor is all that can be run.  Plus a Subaru motor would put me over weight.  So can someone please help me find a class for what I want to build so I can have some guidelines.  Sorry if this is vague, I don't really know much about SCCA rules and classes.  I just know that I want to build a car and go out and have fun.  But I want to build something that can be classed correctly to be able to compete with.  Thanks in advance.

What have you decided to put together?

    Re: Need some advice

I have decided to build an Amod.  My friend and I had it wrong thinking the minimum weight was the maximum.  This is my first one so it is ok with me if it is a little heavier than the minimum.  I have been looking into different motors and still think I will use a Subaru WRX motor.  The reason a Subaru motor is that I have one laying around, and have a lot of friends that are into Subaru's.  I originally thought that Amod was limited to the short wheelbase.  For my first one I prefer a longer wheelbase to get used to it, and the added stability.  Another friend with an Amod told me that the Amod class is similar to  the SM class I am in with the Evo.  Just a catch all class.  I know that after I build my first one I will be hooked and want better and better.  So I feel that the first one being on the bigger side will be great for learning how to drive it, and what I can improve for the second one I build.  I am not out to build a national winning car first off.  Just want to have something to go out and play with and have fun.  So I am sure I will be reading SCCAforums a lot and asking a lot of questions when I get started.  My plans are to have it ready for next autocross and hill climb season.  Crosses fingers

    Re: Need some advice

Everything pretty much goes in AMod, but to be competitive you better be ready to invest in some sizeable multi element wings.

Another thought might be an E Mod car. It would give you lots of freedom in engine, suspension etc. Also a longer wheelbase and the heavier WRX motor will not be a detriment. Being a body expert may help in designing a package around a production car body shape.
