ron: Thanks Tim for pointing out that my math sucks.
I only pointed out that it was wrong, although it took me half of a post to figure it out. You pointed out that is sucks.

treinhar: gary p:I don't see the Road Racing community going for membership fee increase to build a Solo site, and they seem to have more pull with the BOD than Solo.
Well then how about a small surcharge (building fund) on sanctioned Solo events. I know this will not be popular either but just thinking of options.
Well with every person who runs at an scca autocross being a member or at least a weekend member their income from solo should already have greatly increased this year. Considering that in our region Maybe 10-15% of the competators were SCCA members before this year, that seems like a big increse. If they re-invest that in the Solo program then the problem could be solved, since that certaintly more than 10 bucks a person.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? Not only where but when?
That's a good Idea but a required amount might be a deturent for some to enter. If you could ask the members as they enter the event if they wish to contribute to the national solo sight fund. You would have to have checks made payable to such to keep the money in order. Lot's of good ideas here, something should be done.

My understanding is that the weekend membership issue is related to liability and insurance issues/costs. Lawyers Right or wrong that money should be addressing our liability concerns which are as important as noise in both site acquisition and retention. While Ron's idea of a $10 fee for membership or the suggested sanction surcharge may be flawed, some form of directed charge to the membership will be a must to start and maintain a building fund for a dedicated Solo Pad. If not they we will always be begging for a Nationals Site. Someday suitable sites will nolonger be available. Lets face it, a large peice of concrete/asphalt has much more real economic value for bussiness then solo. We need to plan now if we can.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? Not only where but when?
I have always thought that a dedicated Solo site will become a necessity not only for Nationals but for divisions as well.
The only solution that really works is to build a site that is dedicated to Solo on the weekends but can be rented out for other purposes during the week.
The best "other purpose" I can think of is the ride and drive events that major manufacturers put on. To be in demand frequently the site must be near a major population center ( probably no city smaller than say Atlanta, but preferably larger ). It must have clean restroom and meeting room facilities. It must not have residential neighbors but must have fairly good interstate access and be in a relatively crime-free area.
That's a large demand list. I don't see how it could be done for less than $10 million. After that initial investment, rental fees should pay for upkeep and some marketing/booking agent. So...who has that spare 10m sitting around? How about you Salerno, I hear you're wealthy? :-)

Alan

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? Not only where but when?
How about the Lincoln Airport? The west apron appears unused (by appearance using wikimapia and mapquest, as well as the suggestion on a couple of airport sites that list the west buildings as used for storage) and if so it would solve all the problems the other possible sites have.
It is huge. MUCH bigger than anything else proposed or Forbes. 6.84 million square feet according to my rough calculations using wikimapia's legend.
It is located near the geographic center of the US.
It is located near a (relatively) large metro area.
As a bonus, flyin's could walk to the site if they wanted too!!
Anybody have more info on this airport and the west apron?

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? Not only where but when?
the only drawback I can think of with the Lincoln site, is
Nebraska Football... there will not be a hotel room available if
Nebraska is home the weekend of the Pro Finale. I think I read that the population of Lincoln more than doubles during Nebraska home games...

Wow, that's a pretty good find, if usable.
Look at all the pros:
- Concrete
- Located near an airport (duh) and hotels and possibly other attractions
- Southerners have to drive a further distance to get there

Anyone who's never experienced this has no idea... not a single hotel room in the city is open, and for the 100,000 seats in that stadium, there must be twice that number in town. As long as they're not around though, it means the town has plenty of capacity to host us.

Lets see.. 1) Concrete is not a pro... most ever autocrosser can get to asphalt sites.. there are some places you have to drive 8 hours to get to suitable concrete. 2) Airport vicinity is a pluss. 3) Southerners having to drive further.. now that is not a plus.. but it looks like its closer to you.. so its a plus for you!... just not for us southerners.. :)

Nebraska's football schedule is known pretty far out. Next year and the year after is pretty well set. Looks like the 3rd week in September is often open.

Re: 2009 Nationals and Pro Finale? Not only where but when?
I posted this up on the Minnesota Autosports Club website and local Randy Williams said he ran there in 1991. I asked about condition and what event it was and am waiting for a reply.

Agreed, that does look very good. And I hardly ever run concrete, but I don't care!

A spot like that could be fantastic...lots of space, newer concrete (?), plenty of hotels/restaurants, local college town atmosphere and centrally located...I'm liking it

Or hold Nationals in August so all those parents can lug their kids (and the s/o who stays at home to tend to the kids) along and all those school teachers don't have to miss any work.

I'm a teacher...sounds good to me!
Anyhow, as I stated earlier, a fellow Minnesotan ran there in 1991. Here was what he said about the place:
the surface was great in 1991 anyway. the course was so long (top of 3rd gear in my CRX Si) that no one really wanted to walk the whole course.
He didn't say anything about grip; I'll ask. It was only 17 years ago!
