12 Replies and 7886 Views Toters and trailers are too long for highways?  7886  12 Started by  PaulL It seems that a popular size for a toterhome/stacker trailer combo is a 16' living quarters toter, with a 40' stacker trailer. By my estimation, the total length of this combo is just about 70 feet. With most states having maximum length restrictions on motorhome/trailer combos in the 60' to 65' area, how is it that these rigs are so common

7 Replies and 2933 Views Burns oil only when towing  2933  7 Started by  jbmoore I have a 1998 Dodge Durango with 88,000 miles on the 5.2 V8 that I use to tow my CP car. Funny thing is that the engine doesn't seem to burn any oil unless I am towing. Then it burns about 1 qt every 1000 miles or so. The car and trailer together weigh just under 4000 lbs and the Durango barely notices the trailer is back there except on really steep hills. I have never noticed any smoke from it, and the power seems to be good. Once I have been driving for an hour or so on the highway a...

2 Replies and 1073 Views 1 Ton Dually Transmissions  1073  2 Started by  drmenefee I am looking for a 1 ton dually and have a question about the transmissions. For pulling trailers is it better to have a standard or automatic If standard is best should it be a 5 or 6 gear transmission. I'm from the old school and like a standard transmission with as many gears as is reasonable for the job. What about a positive trac rear ends or are they now called a locked rear ends Are there any split rear ends or overdrive set-ups

Does anybody know anything about this I had the idea a while back that renting such a rig would be a great way for several of us in our region to avoid having to make the 2000 mile round trip in our competition vehicles (most of us do not have tow vehicles and are using our competition vehicles to tow tire trailers). I'd just like to get some ideas on who to conta...

43 Replies and 10691 Views New enclosed race car trailer - Tie Down questions  10691  43 Started by  S2kTas
(Topic has multiple pages1 2 3 )
Let's call this a 'Really Nice Christmas Present'I have ordered a new enclosed car trailer for our Honda S2000. The trailer (by H & H Trailers), is being built during the next 8 weeks, and have a few questions on Tie Downs. The trailer is 20 foot long and 102 inches wide, with a 30' V-nose front. There will be E-track built into the floor for tie downs. My first thought, is to use over the wheel tie downs, (some people call these Wheel Bonnets), that ratchet directly to the E-Track. Questio...

Tows very easily, has one removeable fender and a built-in, lockable storage compartment. Large enough for up to F-body sized cars. It's lightweight (about 1360 lbs), about the same as current Featherlites, ATC's, etc.. It was built for Tony Statile by a company in Georgia and has a tall 'rim' around three sides tha...

18 Replies and 17356 Views Putting really low car on trailer???  17356  18 Started by  weasel KP61 I just bought a trailer that is a little over 1 ft high and just barely fits my car. The problem is i can only load it at the bottom of my driveway (so it's a shorter height to go up) How do i drive the car on and off the trailer without hitting the bottom The ramp i have is 6ft long though is very narrow and isn't that strong. What are some ways i can get my car on and off the trailer on flat ground

5 Replies and 1325 Views older dodge 3/4 ton diesel, good idea or no?  1325  5 Started by  skierd I stumbled across what I would consider a big ass truck for sale locally, a 1993 Dodge Ram D350 crew cab, diesel, dually, auto that has 100k on it. The current owner pulled a 5th wheel camper behind it, which bothers me, but the price is right at around $6500. Does anyone here have experience with these old beasties How bad would they be to live with on a mostly daily basis, understanding they get good for truck but still horrid mileage and the size Its complete and utter overkill for what...

26 Replies and 3519 Views $10k Diesel Budget (E-350 vs G3500)  3519  26 Started by  Mugenlude
(Topic has multiple pages1 2 )
I'm considering purchasing a seperate diesel tow vehicle. It will be towing a combined 3500 car/trailer load, plus tools, wheels/tires, etc. I don't see the weight being an issue considering I'm looking for a diesel. My budget is around $10k. My choices seem to have come down to late '90's E-350 (7.3L Powerstroke) or G3500 (6.5L) cargo vans. The other option is a '94-95 Suburban (2WD) (extra seating would be nice), but those years seem to have problems with injection pumps and obvio...

9 Replies and 1563 Views Used full-size SUV opinions  1563  9 Started by  NoCones Hopefully, I'll soon be in the market for a tow vehicle. It won't be a daily-driven vehicle, but will be called on from time-to-time to carry a couple big mutts around town and run other errands like Home Depot trips. It will also probably serve as a family-vacation-mobile. I'm starting to look at used Expedition/Navigators, Tahoe/Yukons, Sequoias, and Armadas. Hoping to stay at/under $20k. Looking for opinions on these vehicles...which you think would do the job best...years to have/not ha...
