7 Replies and 4736 Views anyone rent the tow vehicle?  4736  7 Started by  c4racer2 Has anyone here rented instead of purchased a tow vehicle. I've been buying and driving tow vehicles for several years and have realized that I only make it to the track 3-6 times per year. A quick search shows several rental companies - Hertz, Enterprise, etc. that rent trucks like F150's and Excursions for ~$200 for a weekend including miles. Seems that going that route would be a whole lot cheaper than owning my own and paying the mpg penalty when I don't otherwise need a truck. Has anyon...

1 Replies and 1172 Views Trailer insurance in CA  1172  1 Started by  JSirota I'd like to look into new insurance for my enclosed trailer. I've found that a number of companies refuse to insure it, either because it's enclosed, or because it's a gooseneck trailer. It seems that your average flatbed tag trailer is easy, but gooseneck enclosed trailers seem to flabbergast everyone we call. Who do you all have your California trailers insured with (specifically comprehensive coverage, against theft or break-in, as opposed to collision damage when moving ...

3 Replies and 1045 Views Wild ride - not fun.  1045  3 Started by  BigEnos I hooked up the truck to my current borrowed trailer, an 18' econo-trailer open deck, last night in preparation for taking my car to fix the clutch. Truck was almost totally unloaded and the entire rig was on a slight to moderate downhill. I pull the car out and begin to load it. As soon as the rear tires of the car got up on the ramps suddenly the whole rig is heading down the hill. Uhhh, 'holy $! what's going on'. I'm not really sure at that point but I throw the car in reverse and back off...

8 Replies and 1271 Views Weight distribuiting hitch.....worth $500 for towing 4,000 lbs?  1271  8 Started by  Another Drew I am n00b when it comes to trailering and when I was looking through the owners manual of my Ram 2500, it says that if I'm towing with more than 350 lbs tongue weight, I'm supposed to use a weight distributing hitch. Is it pretty standard to use a WD hitch when towing a car on an open steel trailer I only rember seeing a small handful of WD hitches being used at the track. My car weighs 2250 and my trailer weighs 1550 (according to the registration) thus a tongue weight in the range of 475....

15 Replies and 2667 Views Anyone have a motorhome?  2667  15 Started by  mwood I'm thinking of getting a motorhome for weekend events as well as family vacation use. Anyone have thoughts on issues to be aware of or types to look for/avoid I'll be towing either a SS class Z06 on an open trailer, dirt bikes or ski boat, so I think that indicates an E450 rather than E350 starting point, if I go with a Class C.

7 Replies and 1402 Views Towing a Breadbox WITH a Breadbox?  1402  7 Started by  Garfield Wouldn't it be beneficial to tow an enclosed trailer with a truck with a cap or, even better, a van. If an enclosed trailer (for karts) is no taller than a van, then a van would get much better gas mileage than a truck, would it not I'm debating giving up my V10 truck to get a 5.4V8 Van. I'll be pulling about 1000 lbs less weight than the car/open trailer and the enclosed trailer should not drag nearly as bad with a van in front of it. The theory is this: I get 13.4 highway with nothing be...

5 Replies and 5428 Views Texas Rollback trailers?  5428  5 Started by  BigEnos Anyone here ever used a Texas Rollback trailer Seems like a neat idea, and from talking to the rep's it sounds like they come with good equipment (radial tires, 4 wheel brakes, bulldog coupler, real undercoating). They are looking to be about twice as expensive as a comparable 'cheap' ramp trailer, though. Just looking for first-hand experiences that anyone has had with them. Thanks

I am new to towing so forgive my ignorance. I have heard differing opinions on how to secure the race car to the trailer (open) between attaching tie down straps to the chassis/frame or to the wheels and letting the suspension float. Which is better WhyThanks!------------------Whoomah! (tm)Jan Gerber Ralston, NE95 Neon ACR 11 SSC,DSP,(ITS)92 Civic Si - daily driver, STS

9 Replies and 4870 Views Open vs. Enclosed Trailer  4870  9 Started by  reddog_es22 My wife and are are in the process of deciding what type of trailer we want to tow next year. Our choices are a 14' enclosed or an 16' open. We tow with a 3/4 ton Chevy with the 6.0 so it should be able to handle either. In the past I've averaged between 12.5 and 13.5 mpg pulling an open trailer, any guesses how much that would drop pulling a tall enclosed trailer We generally don't pull slowly, either. Keeping the car out of sight and out of the elements would be nice but I'm not convinced it ...

4 Replies and 1593 Views Empty trailer towing question  1593  4 Started by  rockfan4 I'm going to pick up a car, and I have a question about towing the empty trailer. One way distance is about 600 miles. It's an open trailer, about 1000 pounds empty, tandem axles, solid suspension. I notice it bounces around a lot when empty. Would I be better off1. Removing the front tires.2. Lowering the tire pressure (how low)3. Both4. Neither, don't worry about it.
