4 Replies and 2421 Views "Finishing" a trailer?  2421  4 Started by  CKEvo Hi all, Friend is giving me a killer deal on a 24' enclosed Pace trailer. It is a base model, wood everything. I wanted to at the very least finish the floor and put in cabinets. I would throw in the nice aluminum walls but I cant find them anywhere.Has anyone ever finished a trailer Namely the floor I was thinking of self adhesing tiles and then painting the walls with vinyl based paint and throwing some PitPal cabinets up front. Would finishing a trailer be too difficult for a DIYerAny feed...

19 Replies and 3941 Views FJ Cruiser as a towing vehicle  3941  19 Started by  gary619 Hi all, Just want to see if anyone has used a FJ Cruiser as their towing power. I am looking to get an SUV as a daily driver as well as tow vehicle to tow my 240sx which weighs in about 2800lbs and of course with an open trailer. The spec sheet says it can tow as much as 5000lbs, but apparently, there are a lot of other things to consider when choosing a truck/SUV to tow. So I just want to see if anyone is actually using this to tow your toy car around. The FJ seems to be the most affo...

0 Replies and 2212 Views Aluminum Tilt Bed Trailers - 18 and 20 feet  2212  0 Started by  S2kTas This is sort of FYI......I am not in the business of selling trailers. But I do own a H & H 20 foot enclosed V-Nose trailer. A few weeks ago, I was in Sioux City Iowa and saw one of these at a Trailer Sales store there. And recently saw another one at Austin Trailer Sales on Highway 7 south of Levenworth Kansas. Many of the Trailer Companies sell 'Tilt Bed' steel trailers. However, not too many offer this in Aluminum. Lot's less weight to tow behind your car or truck. More Pictures and i...

9 Replies and 1698 Views Towing a Z06 with a 4runner and open trailer to Topeka?  1698  9 Started by  STiylish Do you think it is reasonable My 97 4Runner has the 3.4 V6 with TRD Supercharger on it and a 5 speed with new clutch and the factory hitch. The tow rating for it is 5000lbs and I should be just under that towing a Z06 with a 1800lb bare bones open trailer. The truck has plenty of torque with the supercharger even with the bigger tires. It currently has 33'' All terrain tires on it and if needed I would get some shorter E rated tires for towing. From Delaware to Kansas there are very few hi...

1 Replies and 1679 Views F150 Tow Rating  1679  1 Started by  cmk I've been to other Ford boards and can't get an answer to this, so I'm hoping someone here will know something about it. I have a 2003 Ford F150, supercab, 4.6L V8, auto, 3.08 rear end with 8' bed. My truck is rated for a GCVW of 10,000 lbs, which makes sense. However, the trailer rating is artificially limited to 2,000 lbs. This low trailer rating only applies to trucks with the 3.08 rear end. I understand that this rear end is designed for gas mileage, and is not the ideal towing gear. T...

I am in the market for a new (2006-2007) 1-ton crew cab dually. I am considering all of the 'Big Three,' Dodge, Ford and GMC/Chevy. I have priced a Ford Lariat, a Dodge Laramie and a GMC SLT. I am going with a diesel and an automatic trans. I don't know how relevant this is, but the race car is a Dodge... Any thoughts on which is better/nicer/pulls better/better fuel mileage/more relaible/prettier Thanks in advance.

37 Replies and 9795 Views Diesel Excursion... 4x4 or 2WD  9795  37 Started by  Mugenlude
(Topic has multiple pages1 2 )
OK, so I've decided to start looking for a permanent tow vehicle and have pretty much narrowed it down to the 99-02 Excursion Diesel. Now the question is do I go for the 4x4 version or do I stick with the 2WD model to save some gas mileage and purchase price Not to mention I need to drive farther to find a 2WD model (I'm in WI, so not to many 2WD model available). I'm thinking about resale value, repair costs, and MPG. This will be mostly a tow vehicle and weekend trip type vehicle, however, ...

15 Replies and 9499 Views Tires for towing vehicle.  9499  15 Started by  Corey Ridgick My Tow vehiclie (2004 Z71 Tahoe) is ready for a new set of shoes finally. I'd like to take this opportunity to upgrade to a set of tires that will improve the towing stability of the truck. The factory Goodyears felt like marshmallows on the highway even when I wasn't pulling a trailer. With a trailer in-tow they are really mushy. My trailer/car combo is probably right around 5,500 lbs. My question is this: Should I bother upgrading to an E load-rated tire Are there any drawbacks to usin...

5 Replies and 956 Views Good weekend use truck  956  5 Started by  mattg I am looking for a truck to use for weekend projects, eventually light (local) towing a possible future car, getting multch, moving couches, etc. This would be a non-daily driver, I don't care what it looks like, easy to work on, parts readily available, leave the keys under the floor mat if friends want to borrow it type truck. People have recomened a Ford F-150 with the straight 6, 4 or 5 speed maunal, two wheel drive. Any seconds on that recomendation, or other suggestions.

2 Replies and 855 Views Recommendations for vehicle transport from Florida to Oregon  855  2 Started by  fritznw Has anyone out there used a vehicle transport company to ship a vehicle across country I have acquired a early 1990s GMC pick up down in the Tampa Florida area and I'm trying to get it back up here to Portland. I received a wide range of quotes from many companies and some would definetly be cheaper than flying down there and driving it back. I'm just curious if anyone has any horror stories or any companies they'd recommend. Dudley

7 Replies and 3523 Views flatbed / u-haul?  3523  7 Started by  Goldfish Anybody put their car up on an old U-Haul box or flatbed truck On racingjunk they have those haulers, but kind of a poor man's hauler might be an old U-haul. I'm looking at a decent 18' flatbed that will cost less than the combined truck/open trailer, has 26K lb capacity and gets 15mpg on diesel - and thinking adding a couple of locking boxes, a tire rack and tie downs this could be kind of a cool solution. The bed is 50' off the ground, so long ramps needed. My wife is really excited about...

17 Replies and 5563 Views 04 and newer Dodge Durango V8 as tow vehicle?  5563  17 Started by  Phillip S. Osborne I sold my beloved Duramax Diesel crew cab pickup to buy a 'vette, but still need a daily driver/tow vehicle for local events. I had also sold the enclosed trailer and had purchased an aluminum unit, and felt the diesel was overkill. I have been looking at everything from 98/99 Suburbans, to 2004 to 2006 Dodge Durangos. Question is, does anyone have experience towing with the later model Durango My trailer, car, and tools weigh in at about 3500 lbs. Is there any tranny or other drive train ...

3 Replies and 1051 Views Trailer Recommendations?  1051  3 Started by  andrewb0x29a I am looking for a trailer to tow my SP car to out of town events. I have started looking online to see what is available, however most of the trailers I have found are 102' total width. Since I would like to be able to store the trailer in my garage, I would prefer to get something narrower (my garage opening is 105' total). Does anyone have any recommendations for narrower trailers My basic requirements are: Tandem Axle ~96' total width Thanks, Andrew

Does anyone know how tow ratings are generated What are the criteria that goes into providing a tow rating How is it that a tow rating can be 7500 lbs and not 7600 lbs Is there a standard battery of tests that are conducted and then the rating set based upon the breaking point If there is a tow rating, then what is typically the weakest point on a vehicle that is being controlled by the rating If there is a weak point, then how can we identify that to find out how to improve upon it t...

2 Replies and 1735 Views 99 E350 van shift linkage problem  1735  2 Started by  dgnmr2 Out local autocross club has a 1999 E350 van to get our equipment to and from events. Recently the shifter stopped working. One of the other club members found the following this weekend. 'I pulled the engine cover off inside the van and pushed the shift arm on the side of the tranny back to the 'P' position. Van fired up. :-) If you move the shift lever in the P->R->N->D->2->L direction the shift arm moves fine and the tranny engages the desired selection. Move the shift lever in the L->2->...

12 Replies and 6911 Views Toters and trailers are too long for highways?  6911  12 Started by  PaulL It seems that a popular size for a toterhome/stacker trailer combo is a 16' living quarters toter, with a 40' stacker trailer. By my estimation, the total length of this combo is just about 70 feet. With most states having maximum length restrictions on motorhome/trailer combos in the 60' to 65' area, how is it that these rigs are so common
