    Aero discussion:  why would any non factory aero ever be allowed in any form of amateur racing?

     

    Pros of non-stock bodies:  ?  I cannot think of a single benefit to allowing aero.  Someone else will have to fill this in.  Any thoughts?

    Cons of non-stock bodies:

    UNFAIR ADVANTAGE: 

    Extreme expenditure of time and money by one competitor will allow someone to have much greater downforce with much less weight and drag than any amateur racer.

    DANGER:  

    If a driver is unaware of an aero failure on track, they will almost certainly crash in the next fast corner, through no fault of their own.  This extreme and unforeseen variability could happen without aero, but factory control arms, etc., are much less likely to fail without notice than a bunch of home built aero.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RISK:  

    If someone dies in a car whose aero should not have passed tech, it will be trouble.  And no tech inspection should have to take on that expertise on or take that risk.

    ADDITIONAL TIME AND EXPENSE: 

    It takes a lot of time, money, and effort to install even basic, untested aero.  It takes even more to do it right.  Then, for every change or tweak of the aero, you have to test and tune it, along with changing the whole car’s setup to match it, and then test and tune that again.  Springs.  Shock settings.  Rake.  Ride height.  Alignment, everything.   It poses an order of magnitude increase in the required test and tune time necessary for a winning effort.

    INCONVENIENCE:

    Aero makes the car harder to work on; harder to access the rear of the car, gas tank,  or hatch; harder to reach the engine compartment; harder to load in a trailer; and harder to drive on the street.   it requires stiffer springs and therefore destroys streetability.  It often works better with really low ride heights which kills streetability.  The time improved on track is worth getting the car lower than its ideal ride height, generally compromising handling to begin with.  It is harder to get around in the trailer or shop.  It is easy to get cut or injured working around a big wing or splitter.  They are trip hazards.   It’ll put your eye out!  (it’s Christmas Story time of year, had to throw that in).

    ABSURDITY:

    It all looks absolutely terrible, IMO, it is frankly embarrassing.

    PRINCIPLE OF THE THING:

    It further diminishes the role of the driver, which frankly should be the focus of amateur motorsports.

    Why allow any modification?

    It makes the car better/faster.

    There are plenty of classes that restrict the aero.  Feel free to choose to run in one of them.
