I am posting this because a zoning meeting is scheduled January 16th because a lobbying group is essentially trying to force the closure of Summit Point Raceway, by limiting the hours to less than Waterford hills and the sound to 65 db! I raced their last year, and I'd like another shot or three at the track.

At 7:30PM on January 16, 2001, the Jefferson County Planning Commission will be holding a "public input" hearing regarding requests to both expand and greatly limit activities at Summit Point Raceway. We are asking that all members interested in showing their support for Summit Point Raceway contact Don Caldwell (301) 384-3455. We very much would like to have members who live in Jefferson County attend this meeting to show our support for Summit Point. The meeting will be held at 108 E. Washington Street in Charles Town at 7:30 p.m. on the Tuesday the 16th, but we would like people to arrive at 7PM.

IT IS EXTREMLY IMPORTANT THAT WE MAKE OUR PRESENCE KNOWN! A group called Citizens Against Raceway Expansion (CARE) is lobbying for a change in zoning. Use of the track would be restricted to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays and a dB limit of _65_. For reference, an electric typewriter at 10 feet is 64 dB and a typical highway noise is dB!

If this is passed, our racing program gets hit hard. This is NOT a regular meeting of the PlanningCommission, so we do not expect that we will have the >opportunity to speak. None-the-less, it is important >that we have people present to show that the Washington racing community supports their community through our spending. We are doing this to show our support for Bill Scott and Summit Point Raceway.

Any questions? Contact Don Caldwell (301) 384-3455 or

Here is another email from Don Caldwell:

To all who have E-mailed me individually: Thanks for your support. I know
Bill Scott and the track greatly appreciate your concern. Below is the
latest mass e-mail to go out to the DC Region SCCA with additional
    Bottom line -
As many people as possible can show up
The attorney says OK from anywhere, not just locals
    Write letters as stated below.

Any other questions, call or e-mail me or the track.

In a message dated 1/10/2001 11:12:21 AM Eastern Standard Time, DCCALD writes:

<< Update to all concerned about Summit Point:
Bill Scott, Summit Point and their attorney would like to have as many
people as we can get show up at the hearing on Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at
the Jefferson County Planning Commission, 108 E. Washington St. in Charles
Town, WV. The hearing is scheduled for 7:30 PM but we would like to get
there early, around 7:00 to hand out pins identifying us as pro Summit Point.
The attorney has said anyone from anywhere is welcome since it is a
public hearing and some of the anti Summit Point forces actually live in
In addition, the attorney would like as many letters as possible
supporting the track, addressed to the Planning Commission but sent to Summit
Point so they can be presented together to the Commissioners. Please try to
get all letters to the track by Monday, January 15.

    Address the letters to:
    Jefferson County Planning Commission
    PO Box 338
    Charles Town, WV 25414

And start the letters "Dear Commissioners"

    But actually send to:
    Summit Point Raceway
    PO Box 190
    Summit Point, WV 25446

    OR FAX TO Summit 304-728-7124

    OR E-mail

    Thank you.

I hope everyone in the affected area shows out in support of Summit Point. I hate to see these things happen. There are only a few places to race, and some of them only a few weekends with unmuffled events (Lime Rock has given NER only muffled dates this year, so we had to join with another region for our races). Good luck Summit Point.

Would it be a good idea to consider changing the finish time for the enduro in June? I would think in light of the problems the track is facing, you don't want to antagonize the people further with cars racing until midnight.

    Just a thought.
