AVE TAKES V8 STOCKCAR SEBRING RACES, BREAKS TRACK RECORD
Tony Ave, consumate racing pro and twenty year veteran of Trans Am, Grand Am, ARCA, Nascar, and other series took both V8 StockCar races February 25th on the Sebring short course. Ave, driving the state of the art Corvette C6 he just built for Larry Beebe Racing, took the pole and led both races wire to wire. Ave shattered the short course record by more than a second, clocking a fast 1.06.0. Other fine performances were turned in the V8 GT-1 class by Guy Ratcliff, Matt Griffin, in his winged Monte Carlo and Ray Webb in his debut in V8 GT-1 in his Riggins Olds newly refurbed by crew chief John Debenedictis.
While no one had anything for Ave, there was some tremendous racing going on in the two stock car classes. In V8 SPO, "Wild Bill" Smith, Charles Wicht, and Lee Arnold, battled it out nose to tail and often side by side in both races. All three ran lap times in the 1.08's and before the weekend was out Smith set a new standard for the class at an amazing 1.07.7. (outstanding considering these cars run on ten inch wide stock car rubber.)
While Smith got the record, Arnold took the first race, with Wicht getting the second.
Over in V8 GTA, the ex ASA cars were proving to be fast, reliable road racing machines and the competition was tough and close between hard nose racers like Greg Cecil, Tony Amico, Kurt Roehrig, Jay Marshall, Steve Miller and others. Cecil garnered wins in both races but not without many serious challenges.
The V8 StockCar group will be back in action March 31 at Carolina Motorsports Park (new addition to the schedule)
