Team Pan Am Regional Club Racers are at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. Team Pan Am club racers John Basler and Richard Dziak are at the track for the 9th annual Phoenix Children's Hospital Event. The first day of racing was good and bad. John Basler driving his 1993 Formula Continental made his way to Phoenix International Raceway for the first time. After his first lap in practice, John's car developed a major oil leak, dropping oil all over the track from start to finish, so John was knocked out of the competition for the day, He could not determine the problem, and it appears to be somewhat major, as he could not restart the engine which appeared to be locked up. Situations like this can be very frustrating for the owner/driver, especially paying the entry fee to race, and making the long tow to Phoenix from El Paso.

Richard Dziak driving his Phoenix F1000 was the sole F1000 class driver in his FB class, and recorded the first place finish. The Phoenix F1000 ran flawlessly and this was Richard's 11 race in the new SCCA Class FB ( F1000). Weather was warm today and tomorrow (Sunday) temps will drop to about 78 degrees which should make for ideal racing weather.

I will provide another update tomorrow to see if John Basler could correct the oil leak problem and provide the results of Richard Dziak in his Phoenix F1000 formula race car. Hopefully John will be able to resolve and correct the problem and get some track time to race on this beautiful NASCAR and IndyCar track. It's a first class track and racing facility.

Today was the second day of racing at Phoenix International Raceway for the Pan Am Club Racers. Another OK day and disappointing day. John Basler determined that an oil line from the oil pump came loose on Saturday, draining the engine oil and seizing up the engine, so John could not race on Sunday, but stayed and showed support for his team member Richard Dziak. On Saturday there were 5 formula cars on the track, but on Sunday only 2 cars. That was disappointing especially for a chartiable event and considering the Phoenix area where many formula cars are present. So when entering the grid, Richard was the first racer on the grid, and the other was a bit late so one of the stewards left the tower, came down, and asked Richard since he was the only one on the track what was his pleasure. He told him to go out and have fun, run enough laps to make the race official. Then the other racer showed up and it was determined we would run a 15 lap event rather than a 22 lap event. Highs winds were present at the track, and seemed like everyone just wanted to call it a day. So Richard once again finished the race and scored 2 wins and 2 races towards his National Competition requirements for 2009.

John Basler will now concentrate on rebuilding his engine and it will take time and money. He is hopeful that he can continue racing sometime in 2009. Team Pan Am club racer Richard Dziak will return to Phoenix on April 4th and 5th for the next Regional event at Firebird International. Richard will fall 2 races short in defending his AZ Regional Championship but should finish the Regional point leader in Formula F1000 SCCA Class FB. The rules from the AZ region required a minium of 6 races and Richard will have recorded 4 races.

It was a fun weekend with about 63 cars registered on Sat and smaller car count on Sunday. There will be more news on Team Pan Am Club racers in the weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned.

Congrats Richard on your 1st day results. I'm sure Sunday would have been more satisfing if the field was full.

John, sorry about your misfortune. I guess its back to the Honda and Solo to keep your game sharp for now. [:)]
