Despite continuing gearbox problems that affected 4th as well as 3rd gear when the car got hot, Stan Czacki was able to give SSB Nat'l Champ Lee Niffenegger a run today. Qualifying saw Lee at 2:08.2 and Stan at 2:08.8 both well below the 2:09.9 SSB record held by Lee at Buttonwillow. From their 12th and 13th starting positions (1st & 2nd of the 4 SSB's) in the 25 car field that included ZO6 Vettes, turbo Solstices and V8 AS Camaros and Mustangs, Lee and Stan moved up to 9th and 11th, split by a V8 Mustang at the end......not bad for a VTEC (Lee is the leader of Team Honda Research Racing) and an old pushrod V6. The race pace was blistering as both Lee and Stan dipped into the 2:07's; 2:07.2 for Lee and 2:07.7 for Stan. Stan laments "Oh to be 50 years younger and 50 pounds lighter".....but this is the closest he's been to Lee's Honda since the 2006 Runoffs when Lee finished 2nd and Stan ran a faster lap in the Solstice (2:03.7 Stan vs. 2:04+ Lee). With these two wins Lee has taken over the Southern Pacific Divisional (National Points) Championship lead from Stan. Three Out of Div. races can also be counted and Lee has two in Northern Pacific......Stan hopes to run a couple OofDiv. pending gearbox solutions.
