    Hey Rules Experts,

I'm reading 3.7 of the solo rules. Can I put my class letters beneath my class numbers?

    Thanks!

    Technically, no.

This is not the most universally enforced rule. I work T&S a lot at Tours, and if I can read the numbers and the color combination does not give me a siezure, I tend to not think about the rules. When they are bad, then we whine to Sandi who puts the official gears in action and gets it fixed.

I don't know what the current tech policy is for big events and nationals. In random years past, they have checked numbers with a ruler and there ends up being a lot of violators.

    Thanks!

I'll pass the ruler check with my design.. that portion of the rules is pretty clear (min / max sizes and ratio of number size to class letter size).

The part that isn't clear is the part that says the class letters need to be on the right (or left) of the numbers. And that the bottom of the class letters needs to be level with the bottom of the class numbers. In fact, there's nothing that says that the class letters an number need to be near each other... just that they all need to be on body panels (not on windows).

Is there such a rule? Did I overlook something?

Numbers and class letters should be positioned next to each other.

From 3.7.b. Not sure if they intended it that way, but next to IMO means next to, not over or under. I might be wrong.

I really can't imagine that if they contrast well and meet the size specs that anyone would ever complain if the class was under/over the number, but I hate to say that with 100% certainty, especially if you mean at Nationals.

If this question is in regards to a national event, you can submit a letter at sebscca.com

If a local question, ask your local tech or T&S people.

There is a diagram in Appendix F, page 262. Do that.

    [rant on]

I fail to understand why so many people try to be all creative with their class & number id. Weird typefaces, crazy placements etc. The id is not a fashion statement...it is there for timing and scoring to be able to know who you are, period. Notice that most professional race series have gone to unified number board types of setups to solve this problem. Hopefully it will not come to this in Solo, but some people just always seem to want to be different, for no good reason...despite how it impacts everyone else.

Grey Numbers on a Black car - looks cool-as-tits from 5' away: is totally Illegible from the Trailer or Worker-Stations. Same with "Tiger Stripe" Orange and Black on a Red car.....

I'd rather attempt to read blue painter's tape.

I saw a guy bring checkered-flag numbers to an event on a silver Boxster. From about 10 feet away, you couldn't see the numbers, they turned gray just like the car.

    "Hey Rules Experts,

Class letters must be "adjacent" to numbers. Beyond that, the SR is not specific about placement but letters and numbers must be of an appropriate size and be legible and have sufficient contrast for T&S and course workers to be able to read them. They can be below or next to the numbers, but all ( letters/numbers) MUST be the same font and color and must have sufficient contrast to enable a course worker to read them on a car going by at 50+mph in varying light conditions with cars coming through the course every 20 seconds or so.

Andy is absolutely right in questioning folks who are "creative" with their car identification, and this is something the Tech people need to address. Competitors can be and are creative with car prep and other elements of the sport, but this is an area where efficient event operations require consistancy and folks need to read the SR and comply with it's requirements.
