MSSCCA will be hosting a Tire Rack Street Survival Driving School May 19th on Columbus AFB. Many more details will be available shortly, just wanted to get the word out so we can get everyone involved.

We will need 30+ instructors for this event. One instructor per student, so we needs lots of volunteers. See the sites below for more info.

OK. First question that jumps out here.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO KNOW to be an instructor?
Answer: Know basic accident avoidance skills.
As in - Look far ahead and anticipate. "Keep Thinking AND DRIVING - Don't Panic", brake control, skid control, keep steering, look for a way out -------.
Autocrossers/track day/race drivers/truck drivers/pursuit trained police/etc. regularly use these skills. We do this stuff automatically.
BUT WE ARE NOT TEACHING A/X/track/Race, etc - we will be working with 16-21 year olds who have little experience with situations we regularly anticipate/experience.
So - #1. patience - #2 - the ability to communicate/connnect with your student and explain in terms they understand - is VERY important.
(And - I suspect you'll be explaining to your students parent/s what the teen is learning because many of the parents have never had the opportunity to do such an event as Tire Rack Teen Driver Survival.)

Driver instructors DO NOT have to be members of Mississippi SCCA. We'll set up a "instructors list" soon.

Teen driving deaths rose by 11% last year, looks like this school is happening at a time when it is really needed.

To bring this back to current news:
The Teen Driver Survival School scheduled for May 19th at Coulmbus Air Force Base is on track.
Ross and Chuck met with the base command last Friday. Command is enthusiastic and supportive of the event.
They provided Ross and Chuck pretty much everything MSCCA asked for - use of a classroom holding about 80 people in the pilot instruction center, use of the parking ramps just outside the claassroom building for the driving sessions, water and fire truck for the wet exercises, alerted Security about the large number of people who will be entering the base that Saturday morning.
Hosting this event has/is taking considerably more effort than a normal CAFB A/X. We've developed local sponsorship and, hopefully - will find more. Not to mention raising our clubs importance with the base.

We'll be holding the "free" A/X for the volunteers involved with the school (instructors, administrators, etc.) on the regular locaion - the "SAC" ramp - on Sunday. Anyone who did not volunteer for the school can enter the Sunday A/X. They will pay the normal registration fees.

We'll have more info on these events soon.

Our Tire Rack Street Survival School is only 5 weeks away!

Tire Rack Street Survival School - Columbus AFB - May 19, 2012

Do you or someone you know have a teen who would benefit from the potentially life saving information and techniques learned in the Street Survival School? Follow the link below or go to streetsurvival.org to sign up. We are limited to 30 entrants so act fast, these spots won't last long.

    https://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/register.trss/uidEvent/35B01C9F-9ABC-8E77-A9AAB7A27EF329AB

Would you like to help with the event as an in-car instructor or event volunteer? We need at least 45 volunteers to make this event a success (30 instructors / 15 event staff). If you are an experienced driver/racer/autocrosser you are the instructors we are looking for. As a bonus for your work on Saturday, instructors will receive a free autocross on Sunday at the base. To volunteer, please send an email to msscca@gmail.com with the subject line "Volunteer" or contact Gene Long at genelong87@gmail.com . DON'T WAIT TO SIGN UP, WE NEED CONFIRMED VOLUNTEERS ASAP.
