For open cars like the S2000 that come with factory roll hoops (which don't satisfy requirements for track days / DEs - the broomstick rule), do the 2012 rules for SSM allow removal of the factory roll hoops/interior covering to accommodate a roll bar designed to replace the factory roll hoops (Hard Dog double diagonal roll bar)? Otherwise the other Hard Dog S2000 option is to use the single diagonal bar and keep the factory roll hoops, thereby limiting rearward travel of the seats and compromising function of the storage compartments. Welcome any guidance or links. Hard Dog double diagonal looks like the right thing that would allow track day safety, but just because it's safe doesn't necessarily mean it would be OK in SSM (thus booting my car all the way to XP).

    Thanks,

    Stanford

Putting a finer point on it, I understand from Appendix C that you can replace the factory roll hoops with a proper broomstick-compliant rollbar like Hard Dog double diagonal roll bar. My main question is whether you have to artfully carve up the factory roll hoop covers (plastic) and the "parcel tray" rearward of the factory hoops/plastic.

Case could be made that we add up the weights of the factory hoops/fasteners + factory plastic hoop covers + tray, and compare that figure against the weight of the Hard Dog double diagonal roll bar/fasteners. My bet is the Hard Dog outweighs the factory parts/covers removed. And to be clear, I'd prefer to not have to carve up the factory plastic in case I someday remove the Hard Dog bar and re-install the factory roll hoops / plastic covers / tray. I'd wind up putting dynamat or similar carpet covering over the bare trunk surfaces. Hope this all makes sense.

My car's so far above min weight (it's tagged, has otherwise full interior, stock seats, ice-cold AC, etc) and tows its own tires to the events that in theory this should all be a non-issue. I just want to do all I can to color within the lines for both SSM and for upcoming track day / DE events (and also improve the safety of the car).

    Thanks,

    Stanford

I want to second this as I have a similar dilemma.

16.1.A All Stock, Street Touring, and Street Prepared category modifications are authorized. Except as noted by these rules and the referenced rules....

13.2.I.1 Roll bars may be added. Roll bars may be welded in. Standard rollover hoops and covers may be removed if the resulting installation meets Appendix C, A. Basic Design Considerations. The total weight of components added must not be less than that of components removed.

Excellent! Thanks. The weight of the rollbar and replacement bulkhead bar I have is definitely heavier than what I took out. Seems all if have to do is reinstall the soft top and I'm legal.
