With the new wheel size rules in place for 2015, I'm trying to understand how it pertains to wheel width. I'm looking to pick up a new Golf R, (DS?) which will be initially launched with 19x8 wheels, but the regular model to follow will have 18x7.5 in wheels. Does that mean I could run 18x8 in wheels or even 17x8?

Yes you can run 18x8 based on the +/- 1" diameter allowance if the stock (or optional) wheel is 19x8. If the R is on the same spec line as the other Golfs, you could base your wheel choice on those wheels as well (but it would open up a 17x7.5 option, not 17x8).

You can't change wheels between models unless the car can be purchased that way. If the Golf R only comes with a 19x8 then you could run that or an 18x8 or a 20x8.

I see. So it's 1 inch plus or minus the wheels offered with car. So if they offer 18x7.5 and 19x8 from the factory, the sizes I could run would be 17x7.5, 18x7.5, 18x8, 19x7.5, 19x8 or 20x8.

Yes, but the non R is classed differently. So you are restricted to standard or optional wheels FOR THE R as your starting point.

Yes. From what I understand the Golf R will be offered with 18x7.5 and optional 19x8. Thanks.
