    Hi,
I am currently running Direzza Z2 255/40 on 17x9 at the front and 225/45 on 17x8 at the rear on a VW GTI MK5. I noticed that the Toyo R1R will be available in 245/35-17 assuming it will be changed to TW200. The diameter difference is more than one inch and I would see better acceleration and a lowered center of gravity. Looks like people rate the R1R lower than the RS3 or ZII SS but would the other benefits give a net advantage for the R1R?

An inch is a lot. This will impact your top speed in 2nd gear, which is a big negative on many cars. I'd worry about proper diameter/gearing first, then tire compound second (or third, after sidewall stiffness on a FWD car)

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply!
I am using a DSG which switches gears very fast and in probably 20% of the events I am already getting up at least once into the 3rd gear. Therefore, I am not too afraid of dealing with gear changes since technology seems to be friend here (this is not the case with the non-defeatable brake assist). What I wonder the most is if the advantage in acceleration and the potentially improved handling (lower center of gravity) more than compensates the reported lower performance of the R1R versus other tires like RS3 or ZII SS?

some years ago i tried r1r in 245/40/17 and it wore out very fast on a 3100 lb car; i'd go for grippier compound not shorter gearing but if you've extra money, testing for your own car is the best

I've had multiple sets of R1R 245/35-17 (23.8" diameter) on a STR Z3 which typically would run 255/40-17's (25" diameter). Because of my 3.07 diff., it really hit the sweet spot for gearing and offered a ton of grip but wore quickly and would lose all competitiveness by 80 runs. Last year, I tried the 235/40-17 R1R (24.4" diameter) which was rumored as being one of two the sizes where there good layer goes much further down. I ended up getting 145 competitive runs out the tires and still enjoyed the benefit of the shorter gearing ratio. Just food for thought.
