A BRIEF (SORT-OF) HISTORY OF THE MIDIV SOLO II CHAMPIONSHIPS
    -- Rocky Entriken --

1967 -- By Oklahoma Region at Stillwater (?)

1968 -- By Oklahoma Region at Stillwater (?)

1969 -- By Kansas Region at Forbes AFB, Topeka.

1970 -- By Wichita Region at a go-kart track in Maize. The track had an oval
with a road course extending out to one side. A spot on the road
course had settled, making an interesting "yump" that would get cars
airborne. The course, with only minimal pylons at the edges, was run
one direction Saturday, the other way Sunday.

1971 -- By Oklahoma Region, at the Oklahoma State University "driving range"
in Stillwater (a driver education site). A small but interesting
lot with some elevation changes. One slalom on the course had just
    20-foot centers!

1972 -- By Kansas Region in Topeka. Saturday was run on a lot at the State
Capitol, Sunday on a small lot and the access roads (including one
sharp climb, 180 and plunging downhill) of a shopping center north of
    town.
Entries - 88. Just one from Kansas City, two from Nebraska!
    Largest class - E Stock, 10 cars
Won by Steve Christian, Colo, Datsun 1600, 2:49.444 (Ladies
was 12 cars, won by Sue Frank, DMV, AP Lotus Elan, index of
minus 8.863; a minus index was very unusual)
FTD: Overall - Larry King, Kan, AP Lotus Elan, 2:36.415
Stock - David Stewart, Wich, CS Datsun 240Z, 2:43.300
Modified - Paul Grounds, Okla, BM Formcar FV, 2:44.359

1973 -- By Des Moines Valley Region at Area 11 Junior College, Ankeny, Iowa.
The long course on one lot was a 2-lap run, the kidney-shaped short
course on another lot was a 4-lap run. This was the inaugural year for
the National Solo II Championship, for which a driver was required to
qualify by competing in his divisional. And the Nationals were very
    close in Wentzville, Mo.
Entries - 131. KC sent 27, St. Louis just one!
    Largest class - C Stock, 18 cars
Won by Greg Scharnberg, DMV, Saab Sonett, 2:58.50 (Ladies
was 19 cars, won by Sue Frank, DMV, Saab Sonett, index of
    minus 5.24)
FTD: Overall - Ken Keifer, KC, AM Crossle Formula Ford, 2:39.68
Prepared - Brian Haupt, KC, EP Sprite, 2:49.83, barely ahead
of Sue Frank, DMV, AP Saab Sonett, entered in

index; beat husband John, who won AP.

us to drive race cars to nearby service stations, which made for
interesting traffic including formula cars and other race-prepared

held but a single divisional. This year added "qualifier" events were
permitted and MiDiv held one such event in St. Louis, but the event
in Stillwater was considered the Divisional Championship. Still, the

1997 -- By Salina Region at the East Crawford Recreation Area, Salina, Ks.
To celebrate the 30th running of the MiDiv Championship, the event
returned to the "old" Nationals site in Salina. The course used was
a representation of the 1983 Nationals South Course, run in one
direction Saturday and the reverse direction Sunday. However, in
trying to replicate a course from 14 years ago, it turned out it was
"stretched" a bit and thus was a lot faster than expected.
