Has anyone tested for performance differences in the rain comparing a full tread Toyo R1R versus a Hoosier Wet? Does anyone think R1R is a viable option for the National Championships in an R-Comp class?

I can't imagine they will be close to the Hoosier Wets. The tread compound is 140 which is real hard for a rain tire.

Plus Hoosier does not pay contingency if it rains and you switch from A6's to Toyos...if that is a consideration.

I read a post here by strano that him and Ian Baker tested an R1R was softer than a Hoosier wet.

Contingency is nice, but I want to save money too.

Hey funny, I just tested the R1R vs the Direzza, the Contact ExtremeContact DW and a real R-compound rain tire.  Unfortunately, the results won't be public until the November issue of GRM.

W710. I'm a bit biased, but I doubt any DOT tire is faster that it in the wet.

Soft does not equal fast, especially static durometer readings (as opposed to dynamic temps taken while the car is in a turn via data acquisition). Compounding is much more complex than that.

And then there's the whole deal with tread design and evacuation, etc.

I am going to put my vote in:
NO QUESTION that the W710 is the fastest in true WET and RAINING conditions.

Next up, Toyo full tread and very close behind is the Hoho Wet

Did I mention how fast the Kumho is?
    Truly amazing.

Unfortunately, the W710 was not available in the size we tested (225/45R17)

I would use a Full tread R1R in the wet/rain over a Hoosier Wet any day! The R1R works good in the pouring rain, and just a wet surface. The Hoosier Wet needs pouring rain to work the best.

I have had some Very Fast times in the wet with the Toyo's on a ST and STS car.

The Only downfall is not being able to win some Hoosiers.

I am still struggling with my same question from last year, R1R or Hoosier W6?

Also, how do you determine optimal tire size for wet racing? Is wider better? In dry I run 285f/315r on a RWD ~400whp car. What do you all recommend (besides dialing back the power) in the rain conditions?

    Thanks!

I was never impressed with the Hoosier Wet and wouldn't hesitate to use the Toyo R1R in its place. PS: werd to yur muther, tread wear rating don't mean squat

With rain tires, don't a lot of people run slightly narrower, for getting more heat into a smaller surface?

FWIW, the new H20 Wets are supposed to be eons better.

I ran W710 Wets at Mid-Ohio... and was thoroughly impressed. Don't have any experience with the Toyo's... but I'd expect it to be about as competitive as their 'race tire' ;)
