I calculated this by defining most improved by how much closer to 100% of your classes winning time you got in 2002 vs in 2001.

It's interesting that Most Improved is typically NOT someone who trophies. So for all you less well known people, here's something to crow about:

Forecasts for Most Improved for 2003. I guess there is a bright side to really messing up last year. SCCAForums Image

LOL... I read your first post and thought "well, after this year I will be the most improved."

SCCAForums Image A LOT of that has to do with trying a kart with very little experience last year, and even then, managing to turn the suckometer way up. heh.

I do expect to do a little better this year in a CS Spyder. Hard to not do better than almost DFL last year. Thank God someone did not show up.

For me, it was running 15 lbs of air in the rear and 18 lbs in the front because I didn't realize my tire gauge was busted since late May. Somehow amazingly Dean Sapp drove my car that way at Wendover Pro and was close to Tom Berry/Steve Eguina.
I do expect to do a little better this year in a CS Spyder.

Back to familiar surroundings, yes that should help.

As for me, I'm going to see next week what running on new tires for the first time this year is like. I'm amazed how well Jerold Lowe and I drove on year old tires at the Fontana Pro, but that was a fluke. The rest of the year showed me how much tires matter. Next year I'll either make enough money to afford Hoosiers, hope the new Kumhos are what some people think they'll be, or just drive local events. It's kind of a waste to drive 800-1200 miles each way to run on uncompetitive tires.

One thing that throws a wrench in this method IMO, is that it apparently doesn't take into account how well the winner did each year. I can see in at least one case someone improved drastically because the person who won the previous year moved on and the winning time the following year wasn't as strong. So in that case the person wasn't as improved as much as the winning time was just weaker. I like looking at the predictions and all, this is just an observation.

I thought about using the % of Top PAX method like I've been using in all the other forecasts, but figured this one would be less controversial. Still, I agree what you say happens. More so in small classes (like AM where the Phantom only appears every other year).

I agree there's no solution without some warts. For this kind of "award" I think any model used still would spotlight many people who don't normally get noticed because they didn't win or threaten to win... which is one of the main reasons of a most improved award. I hope we see people like this in the official most improved awards.

2.5% improvement, and less than .1% behind Kevin McCormick, nice company to keep. But alas, the company got raised a notch this year with Bob in SM.

    Yep...

I just wanted to see how much better I did. Pretty good considering it was the second time driving the E46 M3 (first time being at the atwater tour).

    Thanks Jeff,

Hmmm..even if I would've won my class I still wouldn't have won this. Guess I'll just have to settle for getting 37 spots closer to where I want to be...

Neat. I skipped 2001 and 2002, but I'll bet my most recent Nationals finish prior to 2003 (36th in SS, 2000 -- by far my worst finish ever) would have done me very well on this metric (36th up to 4th -- but I don't know how far off the pace I was in 2000.)

You came in 56th place with a 3.1% improvement in % of Top PAX.

It's amazing how much work one has to do for so apparently little (3.1%) gain.

    how about me for

    2000-2001

    2001-2002

    2002-2003

2000 I royally sucked, 2001 was better, 2002 I was happy with. I was dissapointed with this year, gotta get some shocks and lighter wheels!

Somehow I don't quite thing 10.5 will float in BS, but worth a shot?

I "may" be renting a ride next year, got some time to think about what I want to do.

Cool, I should have a good shot at it for next year :D

First time in F125 this year and didn't bring rain tires :( , so first day's times reeeeaaalllly sucked. Gotta do better next year (already bought some rains)!
