Is the '96 Z28 competitive in FS?
Also, what is the typical (stock legal) mods done to this car?

Thanks,

Oh, that question hurts!!

Pretty much *any* Camaro or Firebird from '89 on is competitive in FS, with the right driver and the right setup. My main problem isn't setup.... SCCAForums Image

Max out the negative camber (ha, ha.... FS Camaro drivers will understand...), replace stock shocks with single or double adjustables (more of a driver's preference as to which is better... including brand). Front swaybar from 32mm solid to 35mm solid (again -- driver's prefence predominates here -- I like my 32mm solid, some go for the 1LE 32mm hollow, some are going for the 35mm solid), and the race tires will actually depend on whether or not the car is a 1LE or not. The 1LE cars tend to do better with the larger width tires (like a 265/45R16 Kumho), while the softer-sprung non-1LE cars seem to do better with the smaller tire (like a 245/45R16 Kumho).
I could go into more detail, but I don't like to give *all* my setup secrets at once! SCCAForums Image

I agree, a 96 Z28 should be competitive in FS with the right mods. Shocks, Kumho's, and maybe a front bar. And most important is LOTS of seat time.

I noticed you're in Sacramento so I expect to see you at some of the AAS events this year. We have a very competitive FS class;(could be 5+ competitive cars this year SCCAForums Image). http://www.americanauto-x.com/

As Karen said, any f-body from '89 up is a good FS car. You do NOT have to have a 1LE to be competitive. Heck, 1LE vs. non-1LE is really more of a personal preference issue.

As for specific things that can be done, it's limited due to the rules. There is an f-body-specific autox mailing list (autox@f-body.org) with lots of knowledgeable folks to answer questions like that.

Ill also be out in the FS class with Todd next season. Again as mentioned above, it is really dependent on the driver and also the day. Really, any one of us in the Sac area could win on any given day. If it is you or a friend of yours I would recommend coming out to some AAS events as there should be plenty of us in FS this year. Although I can't say I want more GM cars to contend with next year, you should definitely give it a whirl.

If you have different springs then you will be in ESP. There are alot of things that will kick you out of FS into ESP. Different offset/diameter wheels, different intake, different exhaust (cat-back is ok in FS), different suspension parts (like putting some 1LE parts on a non 1LE). Pretty much in FS you can swap out your brake pads, your shocks, your air filter and fluids, cat-back exhaust and you can swap your front swaybar. Otherwise you will be looking at ESP unless you have something that bumps you out of there like subframes. Even though it looks like you have springs from your Sig, I would still come out and play. The ESP folks here in Sac are cool.

I will be out in ESP this year.. Going to be racing in the American Auto-x series. Its been about 2 years since I've been out.. Used to race a white 240z in FS/AS stock class with my Step-father. So just waiting to get back in with a new car this year. Working on getting it set-up.
