I'm thinking of installing a fuel cell in my Mustang.  I was reading the rules and it says it can go in the OEM location or in the truck, but the bodywork can't be modified other than to secure the cell.  Does this mean you can't cut the truck floor to install a cell?  I'm thinking of putting in a 18 gallon cell that is used it the GA Cup Mustangs which would require me to cut the trunk floor to put in the cell.  Am I reading this correctly that I can't cut the trunk floor where the spare tire used to be?

If the trunk floor is considered part of the body, then you may not do so.

I don't know the answer to your ? but I bet it is ok the floor is not body work. But do you know what you are in for with cells? Foam needs to be replaced every 5 years, bladder recert every 5 yrs. Cells are plenty safe but installation errors are high. OEMS do a great deal of real engineering to make sure the stock tank locations are the safest they can be including engineering for high precentage impacts and sharp objects tha can hit a tank. Locations of lines and fuel pump can all be problematic. Firewalls or lack there of and Drybreaks add another weak link. Remember the Earnhart Jr. corvette fire and that was a pro built car! Cells are much more complicated than just bolting one in and running some SS braided lines.

I replaced the foam every 3rd year and usually had it out every winter to inspect it in the 10 years I ran GT1. Cells are very easy to install and maintain. This is the first car I have had without a fuel cell. The main reason for installing is to be able to use my fuel rig and dry break equipment for endro's that I will be running. Also with a cell you can run the lines inside the car using steel braided lines which I prefer over going under the car.
