Mazda3 Transmission 3rd gear quirks- suggestions?

I just purchased a 2004 Mazda3 that is still under factory warranty. I noticed that when shifting into 3rd from 2nd (or down from 4th) that it seems to feel like I have to force the shifer into the gear unless I let the RPMs drop and gently nudge it into 3rd. Every other gear feels great. Do the 3s have problems with this, or is mine an isolated case? Any suggestions for repairs (syncros, fluid change, linkage adjustment, etc,) or should dealer repair under warranty. Thanks for your suggestions.

More than one club-racing Mazda3 in SSC has ripped all the teeth off of 3rd gear (including mine).  It's a weak point.

Yes, that seems like the norm....a customer of mine said he went through three factory transmissions in his SSC before giving up and going to a different car (Brent something, look him up).

We are running Royal Purple Max Gear 75w-90 GL-5 gearbox oil in a friend's '05 Mazda3 that is an autocross car, and the shifting has improved over the stock fluid (albeit 45K miles old), seemed to have liked it after about 10K miles of driving and autocrossing.

AMSOIL also makes a Severe Gear 75w-90 and 75w-110 that would be great for racing, works well in the Subaru (notoriously fragile), and I am not easy on it (200K miles and lots of ProSolo launches, original tranny).

Keep in mind also that the current spec of 75w-90 as of 2008 is on the "thinner" range of the previous specification, hence the "new" 75w-110 spec coming out to meet the needs of pre-'08 cars that originally spec a 75w-90...unless you don't race and/or drive where it is cold enough to warrant a thinner gearbox oil, the 75w-110 might be the way to go.

EDIT-- Link to info for the spec change:  http://www.lubrizol.com/products/automotive-gear-oil/J306.asp

Doesn't sound like a stripped gear... you'd get grinding on the shift and clicking from the trans while driving.  The synchros in the Mazda's aren't great really so it sounds like you likely have an issue there.  They are internally gated so you shouldn't have been able to bend the gate at all and the forks are reasonably strong.  So I'd wager issues in the synchro.

i've heard synchros too. I'll take mine in to have it looked at shortly. Maybe next week. The A/C is also REALLY loud. So I"ll complain about that too :)

The AC should not be loud at all.... a little "snick" from the clutch occasionally but no other sound should come from it.
