    soloesp:
The Nebraska Region Board met tonight and decided to move the Lincoln Airpark event onto the proposed national surface. The area we are using is appoximately 1100' x 1300', give or take.

Yes, this is the actual proposed National Championship Site we will be running on.

Eventmaster Matt McCabe is planning on setting up the 1997 Championship North course that was run at Forbes Field. We may have to change some of it for various reasons, but it will be a national level course.

Do the stated dimensions represent the entire area that would be made available for the National Championship event?

Just a note to tell everyone.  If you all want Nationals in Lincoln, email Howard, the BOD and Jim Julow and let them know.

That is what I am going to do.

I also want to thank Mark for all of the work he put in for us.

No, that is just for the event.  IIRC, we would have the entire area, plus or minus, for Nationals.  Obviously, for a local event, we wouldn't need all that space!

For reference purposes, Lincoln will be using almost 36 acres of the ramp. For those that have been to Arrowhead in KC, we have about 25 acres, and HPT is about 25 acres as well. Good grief, there could be problems seeing over the horizon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I saw those pictures, I began to weep with joy and look around for another guy to hug. Then, I remembered this was a serious sport and to "man up", so to speak. Communication may be problematic if the worker station batteries get too low!

PS Wish I still had my Z06. The little Echo may not make it all that far!

    Back up communication plans;

    1) Smoke signals

    2) Semifore flags

    3) Drums

    4) Carrier pigeons

Can't use cans w/strings. You need to draw the string tight for the cans to work!!! Imagine THAT on a hot course.

Unfortunately, calls between the far corner stations and control are billed as long distance.

Having never run at Forbes, I have no idea about the dimensions. Is it about 600' l to r, and about 1200' top to bottom? Also, will it be reversed on Sunday?

edit: Just printed it out. Definately has some familiar elements. Man, one better have some good brakes after the run south from Eve Turn. It's got my heart pumping already !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, how many runs per day?

That's "ewe" turn.  A veiled reference to Roger "The Famous" Johnson.

Bob, you never ran at Forbes.  That's a pity.  Forbes was a great site for most of the time it was used.  It had a unique character.  The North Courses tended to be faster and favor those brave drivers that had the guts to hold the throttle on the floor through the back section.  Big, wide courses that allowed the driver to select his line and the room to use it effectively.  The South Courses tended to be the more technical.  Line selection, execution and discipline were what paid off there.

The high level of grip put a premium on corner entry speed.  So you really had to recalibrate your brain to charge harder into the corners and trust the car would stick.  A great site.  I loved running there until the surface deteriorated those last couple of years.

I remember that course well. If Lincoln wasn't half way across North America, I would be there to run it again. I remember the run from "Ewe Turn" to "CP Distruction Area" was flat in 3rd gear in my DSP car.  Only a tiny lift to set the nose was required to shoot the gap at cones 199 and 203.  Fun course.

When Iived in Maryland and Virginia I was a Snap-On dealer and almost never took a whole week off except Christmas to New year. Living 90 miles from HPT my excuses disappeared when I "retired" my sloooooooow B/SP TR8 and bought the Sky. Lincoln is only a 1.5 hours further than HPT for you !!!!!!!!!!!! Over in Salina the local events are run at a city park on th east side of town on a section of (crazy gripping concrete) runway that was an E ticket ride with tire shreading traction. (One event there was like 3-4 events on the A6s on the Sky and I stopped going purely because of the rubber cost.) Concrete is certainly not the same everywhere and all reports from Lincoln is that the ramp is not hard on tires. I will find out next weekend as they are having a 2 day. Considering that the season is "over" we are busy around here with 2 local events and one in Lincoln. Solo sleepy time starts in November.

Well, I will be there for Nationals, assuming its in Lincoln.  For me, that's about 1500 miles to Lincoln and about 1350 to Topeka.  I can justify going for nationals but not a two day regional.  No matter how nice the site.

I ran Nationals at Salina from '89 through '94.  The "warm-up" then was held at East Crawford, the site you referenced.  If I remember correctly that's the site of the Salina Region's annual "Mirrorkanna" event and even hosted Nationals at one time.  I know the site well having run there several times.

Forbes was far from the grippiest place I ever ran.  Peru has more grip.  The two grippiest places I ever ran were Hunt Stage Field in Ozark, Alabama.  Although it takes a bunch of runs before the surface cleans up and comes in.  And Whitehouse Field in Jacksonville, Florida.  My data logger says Whitehouse but I haven't run the DP car at Ozark.  I  suspect they are pretty close with Whitehouse getting the edge.  The cool thing about whitehouse is that despite the massive grip, tire temps run at the low end of the optimum range and wear is average.

We did get Whitehouse back, so there will be more events scheduled there next year.

Also......Dixie region was working on a site somewhere on the western tip of Florida thats an old air base..all concrete..havent heard anything lately, so I'll have to check up on that one..

Thinking ahead (assuming Lincoln is chosen), what kind of banquet facilities are available in town and can they handle a crowd of 600-800?  FWIW, I was not impressed with the fare at this year's banquets.  Wednesday was better than Friday but neither was better than average.  I don't know if this was addressed elsewhere in this thread but I don't want to read the rest of the 50+ pages again.

And +1 on a free entry for Mark.

Boy, we eat BEEF up here (please reference earlier post about 245,000 cows).  Dinner wednesday night will consist of a fork, knife, an open fire pit and a steer.  If you go away hungry, it's your own fault. I hear cowhide makes excellent tire warmers!

On a more serious side, ~245,000 population in Lincoln.  Twice the size of Topeka.  The Convention and Visitors Bureau assured me it wouldn't be a problem.

    mw

For those of you not up on your grade school geography (Are you smarter than a 5th grader?), Lincoln has basically the same cachet Topeka has. It's a state capital, which means a lot of stuff centers there that caters to large groups. Also it's a college town that really goes wacko for its Cornhuskers, kinda like Lawrence for the Jayhawks except the college isn't 30 miles east. All that adds up to ample facilities and accommodations beyond the event site of at least the equal that Topeka provides. And you're still going to get the same smalltown midwest hospitality.

(You'll pardon if I still inject a little Jayhawk crimson & blue into the sea of red that pervades the area! Wink )
