Christine Berry did up a little google earth size comparo on our local forums, i threw some lables on it. Thought everyone might be interested. Paddock and racing areas are circled in red.

Could we trouble you to ask Christine to grab Salina and add it to the pictures, too? I am curious how it would measure up.

FYI, we've had two Salina sites. For reference, imagine Salina Municipal Airport as the same as Forbes but without the peak at the top and about half the paddock space -- even an almost identical course/paddock layout; we ran nine Nationals there. For the first site (now named East Crawford Recreation Area, then it was Airport Park), back when we ran Nationals on it there were no ballfields -- imagine Blytheville straightened out. It was 150' wide and 1.15 mile long. We ran there six times, had courses at both ends (the south course also could use the 50' parallel taxiway which is now a city street) and paddock in the middle.

Last time we ran Airport Park (1985), Nationals was 608 entrants. Last time we ran Salina Municipal (1994) it was 704 entrants (first year at Forbes was 762). This year: 1069 entrants. We just ran out of room at Salina -- mostly paddock room. Course areas were quite ample, although that 150' width at ECRA where Salina Region runs today still challenges us for doing interesting courses. With the ballfields there we only have about 1/3-mile now, but that's sufficient for local events.

Salina, Ks. -- still the record holder as host who's had it the most (15 times, Topeka's had 14). Big Smile

I could be wrong but if we are running on 36 acres at lincoln that is much larger than the solo pad at HPT which I believe is 12 acres.

A pad that is 1,000 by 1,000 feet is 23.9568 acres.  While it is odd shaped, HPT is about that size.

If my calculations are correct, the area circled in red on the map of Lincoln is somewhere north of 215 acres.

Err... I think your math is a little off.  An acre is 43560 square feet.  Estimating from google maps, the area in red for Lincoln is roughly 1000 x 1750 ft plus 1250 x 4500 ft, which would be 169 acres.  Still a big number though.

Taxiway G is on the east side of the ramp.  It is about 125 feet wide.  So, about 153 acres.  And the north end is fenced and used by the University of Nebraska for crash testing.

Still, more than 2X what is needed...what do you do with the rest of the space, have a circus? drive in movie?...the mind boggles at the thought of that much concrete...Big Smile

Austin folks will take care of the drive-in movie...They can enlarge the theater to maybe 5 trailers long!  Of course, they will have to have more lovely ladies passing out the pop-corn and beer...Big Smile

I wouldn't worry about the "extra" concrete...we'll find a way to use it!Yes

Wouldn't that fly in the face of the 5 minute rule?

Re: NEWS FLASH ! LINCOLN ATTN: Darrin

a good reason to get rid of the 5 minute rule, probably wouldn't make the two driver cars very happy, but sure would be nice for the single driver cars and those  8:00 AM start times, what's wrong with every one running on warm tires instead of just some of us

Re: NEWS FLASH ! LINCOLN ATTN: Darrin

another idea, how about we just make the course 100 seconds long and we place the start line clocks 30 seconds into the course,, then we can keep the 5 minute rule

More space = higher likelihood of Ronald getting stolen.  Devil  Of course, the odds of that are at 95-100% IMO.
