I'd like to point something out....

Just checked the solo class lists and the NEW SS is NOT on the list for 2008....

Is there a Fast track, or addendum out there to allow it that I'm not seeing? If anyone IS seriously thinking about one for THIS YEAR, they might want to contact someone and see if they can.

From the looks of things, it might be better to hold off on buying the 08 NOW, and just order the 09 the way they want it and be ready for next year.

The local dealer got a yellow SS in yesterday.. I'm going to check it out in the AM.

The 2008 is legal under the current listing of "Cobalt SS" in D/Stock.  There is no model year specified, and it also doesn't say "supercharged".  The non-forced-inducted version of the Cobalt SS is specifically listed in G/Stock as "Cobalt SS N/A".  Doug Gill was contacted about this, and he stated that the 2008 SS w/turbo is legal in D/Stock for this year, but not the 2009.

Re: New Cobalt SS in DS? If so, does it have a chance?

In the 2008 rule book it simply states "D Stock ..... Chevrolet .... Cobalt SS " . There is no date range, no engine/option restriction. Certainly, there is an engine upgrade and better brakes on the '08 and the car should (and most likely WILL) perform better. But the G/S Minis were enhanced and stayed in G/S. That said, whoever might be tempted to make the long haul to Topeka for Nationals might want a letter from SCCA assuring that the '08 Cobalt SS is legal in D/S.

Correct - as the rulebook reads currently, the 08 Cobalt SS(Turbo) would be D/S legal.  I would keep an eye out for more clarification in the next FT, there has already been a letter sent in on this subject.

Have to look there... in the pdf for stock classes by make on scca's site, they have the no years, but they have th engine listed..and it's listed as teh 2.0 supercharged.

    That's why i was concerned

as a side note: they added the 'sport' trim level to the SS(NA) since it was dropped for the 2008 year..

Interesting !!!! But not surprising. In the downloadable 2008 Solo Rulebook (pdf) there is no reference to engine type.

Re: New Cobalt SS in DS? If so, does it have a chance?

Ok... so the dealer wasn't really eager to let me take the car for a drive today since it was less than an hour before closing, but I DID get to sit in the car, check it out and hear it running...

The car in stock form sounds like the Solstice GXP with a cat-back.

Did a nice job of packaging with the front-mount intercooler, and I think for ST class prep, the car could really use a CAI, as the airbox setup on the car seems a bit wierd and possibly a bit restrictive.

Nice bit of turbo whistle when you get on the gas a bit... nice burble out the back too.

There is very little clearance between the OEM wheel up front and the Brembo caliper. Wanted to pull it in the shop and try one of my Enkeis on it.

More to come... there is a black one in NY that doesn't have a sunroof, and DOES have the LSD. The 08s are done, and what's out there is it. The 09's aren't being built for a couple more weeks, and Rallye Yellow is done after 2008 as well.

Re: New Cobalt SS in DS? If so, does it have a chance?

Found a red one close "buy"...
Sunroof though. I wonder how much it weighs or causes flex in the chassis? Probably not a deal breaker I guess...10lbs? VERY minor chassis flex. I fit in the car fine with helmet on sunroof cars and I am tall so that isn't an issue.

I really think STX could be interesting with fuel prices the way they are. That said, we have ST guys running race(cough-cough DOT) gas and pumping it out after events now....LOL!

SEB is sometime interesting with how they look at things. It does make sense in DS but you never know!
Where else are you going to put it? AS with the rally cars? Uhh...that would seem a little unfair.

Re: New Cobalt SS in DS? If so, does it have a chance?

I am 6ft tall and I just about rub the helmet on the headliner in my 06 with the seat cranked down. Since the sunroof moves OUT of the car when open, the inside isn't much shorter than a non-roofed car.  I don't think the wieght is THAT much different, but every lb helps in DS since you got ITRs that are in the 2500 range.

I REALLY hope someone brings out one to a national event. The parts on mine fit on the new ones ( from what I'm told ), and with the wider wheel, they're easier to find aftermarket wheels for, so maybe someone besides me will make a run with a Cobalt.

I'm still not decided what I'm driving next year, but it won't be this SS...

Woo-hoo! 245 Kumho's fit in the front with some room to spare for some camber adjustment.

We'll see if the car is going to be competitive in the next few weeks.Hmm

After putting the 135 in DS, there's no way they're kicking the Cobalt out...IMO

Stock legal wheels are turning out to be a hassle. At least ones that are lightweight...Just like it was with the ZOK Solstice at first. I have a set of Forgelines that I might be able to convert from 18x8 to 18x7.5 and keep a legal offset but what a hassle!
Already have a plan with dampers...will use stock front bar for now. It seems sized well. Chop the muffler off to save weight. Align and throw some sticky's on it and see if we can win some pax battles. Results will be telling.

welcome to the class! or back to the class if it applies (im no historian)

difficulty finding appropriate wheels seems an unwritten pre-req to DS assuming you dont own a honda product.  you think 18x7.5 is bad?  mazda cursed me with 18x7's +52.5's Angry

hope the car works out well for you, but not too well Stick out tongue

I don't think I have ever run in DS.
We'll see how the car works out. No promises yet. Hoping for good weather this weekend.
