We were in the club for thirty years. The sport became expensive and the travel times were long. I (davie) knew that the formula ford needed a LOT of work in order to be competitive. At our final national, the ford broke. Joyce was without a car for her final day. I made a deal with Tommy Saunders car for Joyces final runs. People thought she would never be able to compete in it. After she won the national I asked how the car was. She said "it is just like our car... only better handling and a LOT faster".
In my new book (plug) SHEMPI, I talk about racing and my job. I explain that everything fell into place about the move to our dream home in Alden. We tried competing the following year after our move, but the extra 150 miles made the trip very long.
We never regreted our four decades in the sport has many unforgetable memories. Friends that still keep in touch keep the memories alive. Shempi was a big part of our final sixteen years in SCCA. She really was quiet a dog and companion. If it was not for trying to replace our drained savings account, I would have given a copy to all our friends and anybody in need of a 'feel good' book with lessons on good values.
We welcome anybody to come to Alden for a visit. But let it be a warning, you might never want to leave!
