Below is another picture I found via searching of the new tread-to-sidewall interface design:

Any thoughts on how this new design will fare on camber challenged stock-class cars? (i.e. 330i zhp).

    Re: KUMHO WHERE ARE YOU?!?!

Yep!  That's how my 225/45/17's looked when they were new.   But now after 3 events the outside shoulder has begun to round off and look like a normal V710.  I think that with this new design the camber challenged cars will have reduced shoulder wear for even longer tire life before cording.  But what I'm interested in is whether the tire behaves differently with a square shoulder compared to a rounded shoulder.  We're running winter events here so there hasn't been much grip available for consistent testing.

    Re: KUMHO WHERE ARE YOU?!?!

I just received 4 V710s in 215/50-13 from TireRack a week ago. They have 5005 date code. In other words, they were on a shelf for 2.5 years (!).

Should I be as unhappy as I am? I ran them for 1 event, 7 runs. They felt OK, I was playing with pressures. They wanted less pressure compared to my old set (also 5005 date code but on the car for about 80+ runs).

In any event, the question is - does Kumho have newer 13" V710s and if so, what's different about them?

    Re: KUMHO WHERE ARE YOU?!?!

They should be good. TR can only get tires as new as Kumho will send.

Hoosiers are nice :)  AND given the Kumho price hike I can't see any reason to go back to Kumhos.

They can't make new tires on time, they can't keep supply up when needed, they don't produce all the right sizes, should we go on?

Not to sound negative, paranoid or alarmist...but, is it possible, now that Kumho has built such a well known brand and has attained decent market share, that the importance of autocrossers has declined in their "big picture"?

The price hike can easily be explained away, both in terms of oil price and Kumho no longer needing to use V710 sales as a loss leader for marketing...and, Kumho has long had a history of very, very slow boats from South Korea (where "May" typically means June)...but, I still wonder if they aren't as concerned with Solo II as they might have been 3-4 years ago. It wouldn't be the first time that a tire manufacturer had used the grassroots racing community to build brand, before either increasing margin in our space or outright bailing...

    Re: KUMHO WHERE ARE YOU?!?!

We switched from kumho to Hoosier with this last set of tires.  Can say I want to go back to the Kumhos.  The price was about the same, the tires "feel" a lot better and they seem to be wearing a lot better than the original A6s.

.... I'd expect the Kumho W710 Rains as late as summer.   I'm not sure arrival times on the new V710 are clear yet.

Andy, doesn't that make the arrival of either tire moot for Nationals this year since neither would meet the requirements of 13.3 re. the 4/30 cutoff and thus wouldn't be eligible for use (at least in Stock classes) until next year?  Or am I misinterpreting the rule?

    Re: KUMHO WHERE ARE YOU?!?!

Yes, I believe you are right on the rains, no go for Nats this year.  Latest I had heard is that they would be available for Runoffs, but that won't work for us.   I'm just hoping it pours if it rains and SPT's will work well.;-)

As far as new 710, it's not a new model so it would probably just need to be generally available and you could run it.  Your next question is for the latest news on that and I don't know when those will show up either.

Mike, I've run 05 tires as well and they've been fine.  I think it it less important how long the shelf life unused is vs. used.  I had one set that had a couple heat cycles on it that sat for a long time (~5 months) and they didn't seem to work again.  Even if they are 05 date codes I would think they will be normal as long as you run them fairly regularly and store them well in between usage.

    Thanks, Andy!

I have about a dozen events left between now and mid-October when we go into hibernation on the East Coast. I store the tires between the events in a basement where it's about room temperature and fairly dry. Someone suggested putting them into bags as well.Should I?

I know that TireRack stores tires well. I'm only running local events. Maybe I'm overthinking all this. But damn, paying full higher price and getting tires that are 2.5 years old just doesn't sit well with me.

I'd think that as long as you run / store them as you say they should work normal.  I don't bother bagging mine, but I have this CA climate thing going for me.

Prices going up is never a desirable thing, but I think the Kumhos still represent a better competitive life for the dollar than any other DOT tire.

     SPT's will work well.;-)

They worked well for me during the Rain of heat #1 at Nationals 07. I did a side by side comparison between 710s and SPTs, and I was quite impressed with the grip the SPTs offered.

The same way on the inner sidewall.  It has a 4 digit code.  The first two digits are the week, the last to digits are the year.

i believe the correct answer to the main question would be the southern half of the Korean peninsula.  The other Korea, where Kim Jong "Mentally" ill doesn't live.

Just an update to that I practice what I preach. Wink   I've run a couple events now with 08 date code fronts and one 04 and one 05 rear.   Car seems balanced as normal and tires have worked fine through 30+ runs.

FWIW: I just got a fresh set of 13s from Kumho Canada, 2807 build date for all 4 of them.
