    in a car with a trunk (NOT A HATCH) 

    i know  the spare tire cover can go,  but... does carpet on the sides need to stay in??

    As I understand it, yes....it needs to stay. I keep mine folded up and stuffed in either the spare tire well, or where the jack used to be, depending on my mood.
