September Fastrack Discussion
I'd say theres a lot to talk about in the Fastrack this month, I'm sure the bulk of the discussion will be over on the Stock Class Forum about the Stock reclassification and sunset rule proposals. Would the sunset rule impact the street touring classes in any way since they are based on the stock class rules? Heres the sunset rule proposal:
The SAC has requested that the following, introducing a concept for a rule change proposal which would be incorporated into the rule book effective 1/1/2010, be published for member comment: “The committee is proposing a sunset rule for stock class cars. The rule book does not include a process where aging cars are retired. These cars usually have limited spare parts availability, spotty or non-existent documentation, and/or a general lack of availability. While they should remain eligible to compete, the SAC believes their eligibility for Divisionals, Tours, and the National Championships should be limited. The limitations would be as follows beginning 2010 and the cars will remain in Appendix A but will be notated as retired: 25 years from model year designation. (Example – a 1985 Corvette would be eligible to compete in contingency events through the 2010 season.)” Also a few other rule change proposals that may affect street touring: The MAC has recommended adding a safety requirement for splitter edges. To that end, the following proposal is published for member review: Add new 3.3.3.B.23: “Bodywork protrusions below the bumper level (e.g. splitters) which extend beyond the outline of the fenders or bumpers when viewed from above, may not have sharp edges; the edges must be rounded, blunted, or taped.” Yup thats a good idea, I kinda wince when I see some of the blades on the front of some cars right at ankle height. The following reorganization of the class naming conventions in ST is proposed for member feedback: Rename STS to ST and rename STS2 to STS. (STX and STU remain unchanged) This one makes perfect sense to me... add the S for Sport as in sports car, as in 2 seater. Getting the numeral out of the class name and reducing it back to 3 characters would be a nice benefit too. Street Touring: The following correction to a previously-published item has been noted by the STAC: The item which read as follows: Change 14.12.4, under STX, to read: “Rim restriction: maximum width of 9 inches, diameter/offset unrestricted. Tire restriction: max width 265mm for FWD/RWD cars.” should have read: Change 14.12.4, under STX, to read: “Rim restriction: maximum width of 8 inches, diameter/offset unrestricted. Tire restriction: max width 245 mm. For 2WD vehicles (FWD or RWD), these maximums are increased to 9 inches and 265 mm, respectively.” I think there was some confusion that this clears up.

If we're going to change the ST designations why not go with STA,STB,STC,STD....well maybe we could skip the last one and go strait to STE. But at least there'd be some consistancy...and it could be the first baby-step needed towards getting rid of the arbitrary seat-count distintinction that is keeping a lot of interesting cars (with interested owners) from participating because it takes twice as many classes to accomidate everyone but there's a reluctance to increase the total class count.

SM2 is proposed to be renamed "SSM". why not be consistent? why is STS2--> "STS" but SM2--> "SSM"?

As I've said before, STS should move to STE (Street Touring Econobox).

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
I agree that STS2 needs to be renamed but I do not like making STS into ST. To me the whole section of classes is ST (see how they say "class naming conventions in ST") and having one class called just ST would confuse things. That would be like saying lets change the name of ASP to just SP.
The name STS does make sense for the current STS2 cars (Street Touring Sport) but I think they need a better name for the current STS.

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
From another point of view, STS could mean Street Touring Sedan and ST2 could mean Street Touring 2 Seater. Therefore, there would be no need to change. But, to be consistent with the other categories maybe it should be AST, BST, CST and DST.

Ummm I think the reason for the change is to remove the 2 from the class letters so ST2 would not work (notice they also changed SM2).

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
STR and SMR would have been better. Or STT and SMT. Using R for Roadster or T for Two. However, I do prefer using the standard A-D sequential lettering every other classification uses. In order to avoid confusion with the SP classes, just drop the Street part and call the class Touring.

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
I agree. Why are we still trying to invent a new method of classing within a category? Do we really want our class naming to suggest that our thought process goes something like "we do things this way, most of the time, unless for no apparent reason we decide to them this other way"?
Everything else is set up basically along the lines of A, B, C, D, . . ., followed by the category identification.

I think at the minimum, the second paragraph in Street Touring (Section 14) would need to be rewritten, unless it is intended (and agreed) that ST inherit the sunset rule.

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
Why change the naming of two classes? At the end of the day, the naming of STS2 is the problem, not STS. I say change STS2 to the previously proposed STR or something else creative. If you're going to change half of the ST classes, might as well change them all along the lines discussed previously of STA, STB, STC, STE, etc.

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
To be in-line with Stock and Street Prepared, it should read AST, BST, CST, etc. etc.
I sent my email to the seb and offered this format since it would imitate formats already in place.

piknockout:And that's fine, but just change STS2...no need to mess with the STS name IMO.
Agreed. STR or such makes more sense. I don't mind having to buy another letter and I do appreciate getting rid of one character. STS wouldn't have to change and the generic "ST" class would still mean all four classes.

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
I can't believe they are proposing changing some of the ST class names, and yet they are leaving STUL alone.
That just stinks, - Nick I'll be here all week!

Re: September Fastrack Discussion
G. Jay:. . . and the generic "ST" class would still mean all four classes.
making it now a category, even though it may not have originally been envisioned to become such. With the exception of the rather recent introduction of "SS", a consistent system already exists for identifying classes within a category. There is no reason not to use it, as Modified is able to do so with the classing of vehicles that are far more diverse than the range of what fits into the various ST classes.
No reason for SAE or karts to have their own schemes either, but that's a topic for another time and another place.
