seat belt sensor and airbags

when i put in my racing seat and harness, leaving in my factory seat belt of course, i unplugged the seat belt sensor so it would "ding" at me when i used my harness. does this deactivate my airbags, or have some other adverse effect?

What year/model of car? Would it be possible to just plug it back in and buckle the belt behind the seat when you are using the harness?
