    Roll Bar on STS2

Is a roll bar legal on a STS2 Miata or is it considered an illegal cross brace?

Rule books are wonderful things.  I personally find section 13.2.H fascinating.

    Re: Roll Bar on STS2

Not trying to be difficult but whenever the words roll bar are discussed, the answer is always the same...read the SCCA Solo Rule Book and read it carefully.  This is a touchy subject and there are specific answers based on the type of bar, mounting points, etc...

Once you read, fell free to ask specific questions about what you've read and you'll likely get an answer...and that answer might very well be to write the SCCA a letter for a clarification.

This isn't an easy question to answer...

Actually this question (specifically) should be easy to answer:

    YES

(13.2.H  Roll bars and roll cages may be added (See Apendix C)....)

STS2 inherits STS rules, which inherit Stock rules, to include 13.2.H.

(The SCCA would never NOT allow a roll bar for obvious liability reasons.)

A more difficult question to answer is "Is THIS roll bar legal..."  (Read Appendix C.)

I would propose that as long as you maintain the required width spacing, mounting point and location restrictions, mounting point number restrictions, bracing restrictions, etc.  they are definitely legal (and definitely the only way to legally use non-stock upper body restraints.)

Please note that the Miata specifically has aftermarket "roll bars" and "roll hoops" available that are NOT legal.  Read the rules and choose wisely...

    Re: Roll Bar on STS2

Thanks. I've read the STS2 rules multiple times but didn't think to go "backwards" to STS and then Stock for the answer.

So, after reading Appendix C, and assuming the bar is tall enough (which is obviously a function of how tall I am as well), my read would be that a bar like this

    should be legal.

Is anyone on here running a bolt in bar that they know has been approved by SCCA for STS2. Does approval for Solo 1 mean it is also approved for Solo?

    Re: Roll Bar on STS2

The skinny on roll bars in Miatas in Stock, Street Touring, or Street Prepared is that it can't have any more than four attachment points, it may be bolted in (follow the rules in the book for foot thickness and bolts) or it may be welded in. It does NOT need to be higher than the driver's head unless you want to use non-OEM upper body restraints.
