TOLEDO, Ohio (July 31,2012) – The penultimate TireRack SCCA ProSolo round of the season went to Jason Burns, of Red Lion, Pa.,who took his second career Gumout Super Challenge win with last weekend at theToledo ProSolo at the Toledo Express Airport. Mindi Cross, of Phoenix, Ariz., tookthe Ladies Challenge win in the final tune-up before the ProSolo Finale.
Burns took the hardroad to the Super Challenge crown, earning the top qualifying spot in a SuperStock class that separated the top four by just 0.165-second. Once in the 32-carfield, the pressure was on Burns to drive to win five-consecutive head-to-headbattles.
The 2006 F Stock SoloNational Champion, got a previous win only after the car that defeated him wasdisqualified. This time, he left little doubt.
With the gripimproving throughout the weekend on the airport concrete surface, Burns managedthe Strano Performance Corvette throughout the weekend. That grip also caused anumber of red light runs by the time the Gumout Super Challenge was in fullswing as competitors tried to get a jump on the field. False starts by A StreetPrepared top qualifier Aaron Miller (Mitsubishi Evo) and Street Modifiedspeedster Aaron Shoe (Moton USA/ACD-Tuning.com/JSCSpeed Mitusubishi Evo) gaveBurns a pass through the first two rounds.
When Burns knocked offyet another class top qualifier, this time E Stock’s Bartek Borowski (MazdaMiata), he was into the finals against A Stock leader Tony Savini’sStranoparts.com/Evo School Chevrolet Corvette.
While Burns was takingcar of Savini to advance to the final, his closest Super Stock competitor,Matthew Braun, had driven his PowerPlug Corvette to the opposite semi-final.Braun couldn’t get past Chris Fenter’s C Stock top-qualifying Mazda MX-5, however, leaving Burns and Fenter in the final.
Burns took the leadwith his first run on the right side of the course, then hit his marks with astrong enough run to the Gumout Super Challenge title.
Savini topped Braun inthe consolation round for third place.
Cross qualified thirdin the Ladies Class 1 group driving the Hoosier Racing Tire/Thanks Frank!Mitusbishi Evo. She topped eventual third-place finisher Michelle Quinn (ThanksJeff! KBS Mk7) in the semi-final, then powered past Teddie Alexandrova’s PenistonOils/Larsens Biscuits Mazda RX-8 for the victory.
The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo season concludes withthe Tire Rack ProSolo Finale at the Lincoln (Neb.) Airpark, Sept. 1-2. Doublepoints in the season long championship are available at that round, with aplenty of drivers still in the hunt for the Gumout Super Challenge title.
